Notes on the Sublime

Mark was born in Cairns and has been painting since the 90’s. He holds a BA in Fine Art from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in painting and an honours degree from James Cook University in Creative Industries.

Notes on the Sublime explores the Kantian notion of sublime. “Whereas the beautiful is limited, the sublime is limitless, so that the mind in the presence of the sublime, attempting to imagine what it cannot, has pain in the failure but pleasure in contemplating the immensity of the attempt.” Immanuel Kant, Critique of Pure Reason

Between These Lines – Works by Sarah-Jane Botham

Her debut solo exhibition Between These Lines showcases her obsession and experimentation with line often extending beyond the surface of the canvas.  These works feature bold lines, an intense yet monochromatic colour palette and elements of movement.  Between These Lines is the artist’s response to varied influences, including the artwork of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Len Lye, traditional Maori weaving and the New Zealand landscape, the recent writing of French economist Thomas Picketty, traditional “women’s crafts” and her experimentation with the effects of directional lighting.

The artist warmly invites you to celebrate the opening of Between These Lines at Canopy Art Centre this Friday 19th September at 6pm.   Invitation attached, please distribute.

When: 17th Sept – 4th October
Where: Canopy Art Centre, 124 Grafton Street Cairns
Opening Night: Friday 19th September 6pm
